Make the Best of Studying at Home

Dorm rooms, study spaces, libraries and coffee shops are just some of the places you’re used to using when it’s time to study. A space where you can study for exams, work on assignments, or catch up with friends when you take that much needed break. Being home for the semester is a game-changer for your schedule and takes adapting to, but you can make the most of it.

Here are some tips to help you put your best foot forward and complete the semester at home.

Tip 1: Stay on Schedule

Maintain your daily routine as if you were still on campus. Get up and ready for your class because even if you’re not physically there, you need to be mentally prepared for the lecture and discussion. Keep deadlines and due dates from your course syllabi in mind so that you submit everything on time.

Tip 2: Limit Distractions

In a time when being in the know is as important as ever, it’s important to remember that class time should have your undivided attention. Multitasking seems simple enough but can take your focus away from completing an assignment or finishing those lecture notes. Set aside time for breaks, but remember to be productive.

Tip 3: Set Up Shop

It’s tempting to stay in your pajamas in bed, but getting dressed helps create the mindset that you’re in learning mode. You don’t have to put on a suit, but make the effort to be presentable. Working at a desk or an area where you can focus keeps your mind on task and focused.

Tip 4: Unplug and Unwind

It’s important to take care of your mental and physical wellbeing as well as your academics.  The same way that you took time from classes and school to hang out with friends and relax, do it now that you’re home. Call a friend, check off a task on your personal to-do list,, read a book (an actual book) or participate in the family game night you’ve been avoiding. If you are craving social interaction, join a house party or organize a virtual happy hour (21+). And if no one is around, binge on tik tok videos (they never run out) once you have finished binging on Netflix shows.

Studying at home can be difficult—it’s easy to procrastinate and get distracted. With some planning and organization, you’ll be able to focus on work and finish out the semester.
