PROGRAM FAQS

DO I HAVE A SAY IN THE COMPANY THAT I WORK FOR?

All students will interview with 1 startup company that our team has determined is the best fit for you. You are able to confirm or decline the offer sent by the company. If it's not a great match, we'll do our best to find another great one but in 90% of cases the first pre-vetted startup is the best opportunity.

HOW DOES THE “MATCHING PROCESS” WORK?

We'll look at your skills, major, interests, experiences, and goals to determine what might be the best role, and introduce you to a company that is looking to fill that void accordingly. You'll chat with the startup, see if it's the right fit. If it is, great! If not, we'll get you in touch with other companies (one at a time) until we find the best fit for you. We guarantee a placement for all of our fellows or else we will look at other cities, and as a last resort, will issue a full refund.

For more information on our host startups visit our Startup Page.

HOW MANY HOURS A WEEK WILL I BE WORKING?

If you’re in the full time program, you can expect to be working 30-40 hours per week.

WHAT ROLE WILL I TAKE ON WITH THE COMPANY?

Within the company, students tend to take one of four roles:

  1. Business development and sales

  2. Marketing

  3. Software or hardware development

  4. Analytics

  5. Design (UX/UI + graphic design)

Each of these roles is very versatile and will expose you to different aspects of the startup.

WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY IN A STARTUP LIKE?

There is no typical day at a startup! However, you may work on projects independently that are your assigned tasks, self-initiated projects, team projects, and additional professional opportunities with company executives.

WHAT GOES ON DURING ORIENTATION?

The orientation events vary by city, because each city has a unique startup ecosystem. Events will also vary based on the time of year; the events for one specific city will not be the same year round. Your orientation leader (awesome Sage Corps alums) and our local staff will organize group activities starting with a health/safety session, professional networking workshop, some meals, light sightseeing, and 1-2 professional events.

WHAT ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF WEEKLY PROGRAMS TO EXPECT?

Examples of weekly events that you can expect over the course of your program include Networking Events, Tours and Presentations at Startup Accelerators, Roundtable Meetings, Fireside Chats, City-specific cultural activities and other social activities.

WILL THIS OPPORTUNITY BE PAID?

We ask that all startups provide a stipend for each student in order to compensate them for their time. However, many startups are strapped for cash and may not be able to provide a stipend. During your interview, you’ll be able to note your preference for compensation and later confirm with your host startup.

DO I HAVE A NETWORK OF INTERNS WITH ME?

We send cohorts of 10-20 students to each city. Outside the office, you and the other cohort members can explore as much as you'd like - whether that's going out to dinner, exploring the local culture, or traveling outside of the city for a weekend.

HOW MANY INTERNS WORK AT EACH STARTUP?

There are 1-2 Sage Corps Fellows per startup, but each company may have other local or international interns that they are bringing onto the team.

OUTCOMES FAQS

WHAT DO PAST INTERNS USUALLY WALK AWAY WITH FROM THE PROGRAM?

No two interns have the same fellowship experience, and fellows walk away with a variety of skills and insights. Past fellows developed hard skills like practical experience with coding, data analytics, content development, or business development and sales. They have also developed soft skills like interpersonal and cross-cultural communication, time management, patience, teamwork, and flexibility. Beyond these skills, students have gained the ability to network and promote themselves to future employers.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THEIR SUCCESS STORIES?

We have many! But, our exit surveys show that the vast majority of our fellows walk away with new and unique experiences that they feel they can bring to future endeavors such as their coursework, future internships, or future full-time jobs. Read more about student outcomes.

HAVE COMPANIES OFFERED FELLOWS A FULL-TIME POSITION?

Yep! Obviously that differs based on the startup, but there are absolutely opportunities for future connections.

WHO ARE THE ALUMNI?

We have alumni across the globe, who are taking part in startups, Fortune 500 companies, or pursuing further education. It is a great network that is very connected.

HOW ACTIVE IS THE ALUMNI NETWORK? HOW DOES IT WORK?

The Sage Corps alumni network is very active! Our alumni from universities and cities across the world connect to share their Sage Corps experiences with future fellows and to offer one another professional advice and share job opportunities. The Sage Network is a great opportunity for Sage Corps Alumni and current fellows to broaden their professional networks and build lifelong friendships.
